How an image QR code works

A QR code can only hold a small amount of text, so it can't contain a photo. An image QR code holds a short link to a page where the picture is hosted. When someone scans it, their phone opens that page and shows the image, with no app needed.

With Pro, QR Simple hosts the image for you behind a short qr-simple.com link. Because the code points to that link rather than a fixed file, you can replace the picture later and every printed copy shows the new one.

Getting the picture right for phones

Most people will see your picture on a phone, often on mobile data. A few minutes of preparation makes it load fast and look sharp:

  • Resize for screens: around 2,000 pixels on the long edge is plenty for a phone and keeps the file well under 5 MB.
  • Compress large photos before uploading so they open quickly.
  • Portrait pictures fill a phone screen better than wide ones.
  • Tell people what they'll see, for example “Scan to see the floor plan”.
  • Print the code at least 2 cm (0.8 in) wide, dark on a light background.

Free option: link to a picture that's already online

If your picture already has a public link, on your website, in a shared album or as a cloud-storage share link, you can make a free static QR code of that link. It never expires, but it only works while the link stays public and the file stays where it is, and you can't swap the picture behind a static code.

Choose Pro when you want us to host the image, change it later, protect it with a password or count scans.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a QR code for a picture?

Upload the picture with Pro and we create a code that opens it. If the picture already has a public link, paste that link into the free generator instead.

Can a QR code store an image directly?

No. QR codes hold a small amount of text, far too little for a photo, so every image QR code links to a hosted copy of the picture.

What's the maximum image size?

5 MB per image. Resizing to around 2,000 pixels on the long edge keeps quality high and loading quick.

Can I change the image after printing?

Yes, with Pro. Upload a new picture and the same printed code shows it.

Do people need an app to see the image?

No. The phone's built-in camera reads the code and the picture opens in the browser.

Can I keep the picture private?

Yes. You can add an optional password, so only people you share it with can open the image.
